6133 Blog: 16 February 2016

Chris and Jon Calon spent the long weekend in Moncton working outside in -20 degree weather, helped at times by Luc Doiron. Jon flew to Moncton at the last minute when we realized that the to-do list was simply too large for Chris to handle on his own.

They had a long list of things to do:

  • Replace the main air reservoir with a donor from a scrapped unit
  • Attach a new pilot
  • Shim the coupler (it was too low – a common Rapido complaint!)
  • Attach the air and check for leaks and then fix all the leaks
  • Do a full brake test and inspection
  • Fabricate a new uncoupling lever on the end of the car that has the new pilot
  • Remove the old AEI tags and attach the new ones
  • Remove the bathroom sink and counter as they had become loose
  • Replace four brake pads with no pit to do it in
  • Reconnect the Q-Tron Axle Generator. Not easy to do when the cable is fozen.
  • Replace a leaky valve in one ofthe cabs

That doesn’t include all of the trips to the equipment rental company, Princess Auto, Home Depot and other stores to buy needed supplies. The guys put in a succession of 15-hour days, and are quite rightfully exhausted. I am pleased to announce that RDC 6133 has passed its CN inspection! CN will be moving it into their yard in the coming days and 6133 will be put in a freight train to Toronto.

We still have a lot of work to do on this car. The interior is knackered and one side is completely covered by graffiti. That’s going to be a challenge to remove! Hopefully 6133 does not get more beaten up on the way to Toronto.

RDC 6133 has been badly vandalized on one side.

We’ve raised just over $30,000 for our RDC restoration efforts. This is well short of our goal, so contributions are still very welcome. Thanks to everyone who has contributed so far!
